My husband and I ...

My husband and I stumbled upon this resort when trying to find a family friendly resort that had enough activities on site that would keep our children (3 and 10) entertained for the full week. Our travel agency had not booked this resort before so we were going solely off of the reviews found online – which appeared to be really good! The resort is literally a 15 minute drive from the Airport – nice and close! Upon arrival – our room was not ready, so we had to wait around for a couple hours. Which is not fun when you have two eager children wanting to swim and explore all of the fun things to do! Lesson learned for us to access the hospitality area where we could have changed into cooler clothes/bathing suits or lounge in the room provided. FINALLY – we are able to go to our room.. We walk in, and the smell hits us like a wall. It’s pure old basement musty smell topped up with a strong perfume air freshener to attempt to cover it up. Now – with this being said, It’s common for most Caribbean resorts to have that damp, musty smell. After turning on the air conditioning and ceiling fan, as well as airing it out with the balcony door open the smell lessened, however it never did fully go away. We had a family suite, which included a king sized bed and a bunk bed for the kids. To be honest the bunk bed seen better days. My 10 year old actually asked if he “had” to sleep on it because he thought it was going to collapse on his younger sister sleeping below. But having the separate sleeping area for the kids – even if it was only a partial wall separating it from the rest of the area was really nice. The balcony is nice – the week we spent there was super windy, so it was nice to open it up and feel the breeze flow through. Also it was nice to have that extra space to hang our bathing suits to dry out. The resort itself is very clean, including the rooms. Food was good if you’re not overly picky. Lots of options to choose from and lots of options for kids too. We didn’t enjoy the restaurants like others who have reviewed this resort, we went to the Light House, Big Ben and the Mexican one. We preferred the buffet as after each restaurant we were disappointed and they didn’t have the best options for kids. My husband did get a bad travelers tummy a few days in. Imodium/Pepto didn’t help. I experienced one day mid-week with an upset tummy even though I tended to stay away from the meats, but Imodium helped for me. The kids were fine. Probably because they ate more of the bland foods. The kids really enjoyed desert buffet. So did the adults ;) The kids pool/activity area… It’s a little worse for wear. However, it served its purpose and kept the kids entertained for hours. Getting to the Pirate Ship activity area was rather strange as you had to walk through the kids daycare and through a small tunnel to get to it. Because you had to walk through the daycare, access to the Pirate Ship is limited to certain hours (after 1:00pm) which is really inconvenient when you have younger ones who are ready for a nap by that point. No food or drinks allowed in the kids area, so sorry if you want to enjoy a cold beverage while you’re watching your kids play.. (We snuck them in and it was fine as no one is monitoring it anyways). Having the snack area close to the kids water-park is really nice – perfect for a quick bite to eat as it saves a LOT of walking to get to the opposite end of the resort to access the buffet. Nightly entertainment was REALLY good! I think it was one of the things our kids looked forward to the most! The little Creperie was open after the nightly shows which was nice for everyone to grab a little treat before returning to our rooms for the night. This hotel offers 24/7 room service – we only ordered room service once (burgers, hot dogs and fries) and it was fine – took about 30-40 minutes. This resort has a LOT of bars and snack areas everywhere – super convenient! The main pool area was well maintained – nice and clean. Beach area was also nicely kept, you could see the tractor raking the beach every morning. We didn’t get to swim much because it was red flagged every day due to high winds creating MASSIVE waves. But we were able to jump and play in the waves which my 10 year old loved. As far as I could tell the water was nice – not rocky and there was no need for water shoes. Mini put was fine for the kids; it wasn’t anything fancy and tad confusing at times, but the kids enjoyed it. My 10 year old did not do the zip line or rock climbing wall. The staff are all very pleasant and friendly. We booked an excursion to the Dolphinarium which included passes to a massive water-park which everyone enjoyed. FYI: Upon check in, the concierge try to convince you to attend a breakfast the following morning – they say that you will get big discounts on excursions and free swag for attending and listening to what they have to say. Ultimately, they are trying to get you to buy into vacation packages. We originally opted out as we were not planning on booking an excursion and had no intention of buying into anything, however we learnt that we could save at least $100USD for attending, so we did. It was interesting to hear what they had to say, but a waste of time if you have no plans to purchase anything – so I guess it’s a personal decision whether you want to waste a couple hours of your time to save some $$. Overall I would give this hotel a 4 star rating. For the price we paid and what was all included, I would recommend this resort – with caution about the few minor things to other families who wish to visit
